Volunteer Lawyers for Justice

VLJ offers free assistance to veterans through a monthly clinic at the East Orange VA.

This is a FREE meeting with an attorney to discuss any issues that concern you. The attorney will also go through a set of questions covering different areas to identify any additional issues that may be affecting you. You will receive an action plan with recommendations on how to get help. Attending this limited clinic is the first step toward resolving the issues you’re facing.

Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) provides FREE legal help to those who are serving or have served in the military and are found to be eligible for VLJ services. Our program offers the opportunity to meet with a attorney at VLJ’s monthly clinic in Newark, NJ. Attorneys provide the following:

1. If you are seeking a criminal records expungement – Volunteer attorneys provide legal advice on your eligibility to expunge your criminal record in New Jersey, and if you are eligible, they will outline the path to expunging the record.
2. If you are seeking to restore a suspended NJ driver’s license – Volunteer attorneys provide legal advice and brief services to initiate the process of restoring your NJ driver’s license.

Although VLJ does not currently have specific programming for female veterans, from July 2015 to June 2016, VLJ worked to better understand the unique challenges faced by female veterans and if their experiences impacted their legal needs when returning back to civilian life. Through this program, VLJ conducted the first ever legal needs assessment.

In addition, VLJ continues to look at ways to increase access to legal services for female veterans, through the completion of this report and our other work in the New Jersey veterans community.
